Floor Tile On The Wall?

There are many new trends in today’s world of design, the technological advances we have made in the construction industry makes it possible to do some unheard of things with tile and other surfaces. What might seem normal today was most likely an impossible task years ago, one of these ideas is installing large format floor tile on the wall. Most of the tile shoppers of today want the largest possible tile, with the smallest possible grout joint in between. To achieve this many people have started installing large format (over 15″ on one or more sides) floor tile on the walls. There are a few things to consider before proceeding with this design choice:

Is the wall sturdy enough to hold such weight?

Floor Tiles are typically much heavier than tile that is designed for wall installations, so making sure your substrate is structurally sound and able to hold the added weight is key.

Do I have the proper adhesives to set a large, and heavy, tile on the wall?

As mentioned above, Floor Tiles are quite heavy, and standard wall tile mastic will not be strong enough to hold these heavier tiles. You will need a polymer modified thin-set designed to adhere large format tiles to the wall. We recommend Pro-Lite Tile and Stone Mortar, it has superior bond strength and can even bond tiles to the ceiling!

Is there coordinating trim for this tile?

Not all tile is made with coordinating trim, like bullnose. Bullnose is a small rectangular trim tile that has a rounded finished edge on one side that is typically used to border the field tile as to cover all raw tile edges. There are many floor tiles that do not offer this trim piece. In such cases you will have to find another trim to border with, a plastic/metal tile cap, or simply grout/caulk the edge and try to hide the exposed tile.

Is the tile rectified?

Whether or not the tile in question is rectified can be a big issue with such an installation. Rectified tiles are not very forgiving for variances in the substrate, so if your wall has a lot of dips and valleys in it, a rectified tile will have quite a bit of lippage. The best way to avoid this is to make sure the wall is smooth, and flat, and if not, use a high strength patch to make is flatter before installing tile.

Keep these few conditions in mind before selecting your tile and your installation should go nice a smooth. Of course if you need any advice, tips, or tricks we are always a tap of the keyboard or a phone call away to give you the help you need!

Choosing The Right Contractor

Augusta Grey

Augusta Grey

Choosing the right tile contractor or any contractor for that matter is a very challenging task. There are many variables to consider in choosing a quality professional. I have heard my share of horror stories from customers who chose on price, or trust alone and were more than dissatisfied with their final product. Choosing the right tile professional could be the difference in having a quality installation you love for years, or one you have to hire someone else to tear out and re-do in a few weeks. There is nothing worse than paying for it twice, not to mention the cost of removing the poor quality job.

First and most importantly, are they licensed and insured? In order to practice business in Brevard County, a contractor must be licensed and insured. To get an occupational license in Brevard, contractors are put through a series of tests related to their trade, and must have a certain amount of references, insurance, experience, and assets.  Brevard County has a great website that will tell you if your flooring contractor has a valid county license and insurance, the link is below.

You can Click Here to check and see if your prospective contractor is licensed in Brevard County

Second, ask for references. All good tile guys will have them, and most have done commercial properties such as restaurants, stores, and offices that you can go visit and see a great example of their work!

Third, quiz them. You want a contractor that knows their trade. Ask your prospective installer everything you want to know about your installation, the good contractors will have no problem answering each and every question. See if they have worked with your particular material, or something similar, before. Ask them absolutely anything you want to know, it’s their duty to be knowledgeable in their trade.

Fourth, ask about a labor warranty. Reputable installers typically offer between 1 and 5 year warranties on their labor. Keep in mind a labor warranty is exactly as it sounds, a warranty on just their labor. If your flooring materials are defective or of inferior quality, it is not your contractor’s fault. Be sure to go over all the materials you’ll need for your installation with your flooring professional before they start installing it, as most manufacturers won’t accept any claims after the material has been installed.

Remember; Tile, and all flooring in general is a very permanent decision, be sure to choose the correct professional for the job.

How-To: Tile Over Wood

When installing tile in a mobile home, or on the second floor of a house/condo, there may be a plywood sub-floor. There are a few extra steps needed to tile over wood than that of the normal concrete installations. It is important to be prepared with any installation, so be sure you have the correct tools and supplies necessary for tiling this application. You will need additional supplies than you would for a normal tile installation over concrete, such as: Concrete board, concrete board screws, fiberglass joint tape, and Polymer modified thin-set. Below you will find a great illustration depicting an exploded view of a ceramic tile installation over wood from The Family HandyMan.

First off you want to prepare the sub-floor for the concrete board, this means screwing down loose/squeaky spots in the plywood, sanding down uneven plywood joints, and making sure the substrate is cleaned thoroughly.

Once all the prep is finished you will want to dry lay all of the concrete board pieces. This means taking the pieces and cutting them to fit and laying them out on the floor where they will go.

After you’ve made all your cuts and laid the pieces out you are ready to spread some thin-set. Be sure to use polymer modified thin-set for this part, you need the flexibility under the concrete board. Pull all your cut pieces of board off the floor and use the flat side of your 1/4″ notch trowel to spread a layer of thin-set, then comb it out with the notched side.

Once you have spread enough thin-set for one sheet of concrete board, lay in into the thin-set then screw it down using your 1-1/4″ concrete board screws. Be sure to put your screws 4 inches apart for maximum strength.

Now you are ready to tape the seams. This is the easiest part, the fiberglass seam tape has adhesive on one side, so simply stick it to the concrete board and then spread some thin-set over the line of tape with the flat side of your trowel or a putty knife to make it all flush. Once the thin-set on your seams has dried it is a good idea to go over it with a sander to knock down high spots and make everything flat.

Now you are ready to tile!
